We have all seen the upsurge in use of e-cigarettes, vaping pens, and cartridges. Cool names and devices are marketed to kids. Prevalence of use is 1 in 20 middle school students and 1 in 5 high school students! This epidemic must be stopped, and we all have a role to play.
Manufacturers of these products claim that their chemical formulations are proprietary – so they aren’t required to divulge the long list of toxins they contain, including flavorants, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals. This secrecy shrouds truth from users that the products: are highly addictive, can have levels of nicotine MUCH higher than those found in regular cigarettes, and can stunt brain development and cause lung disease, ruining young lives.
So, what can we do? We ought to ask our kids, our family members’ and friends’ kids, and our kids’ friends if they vape or witness vaping – and then get ready for the answers. Advise them of the information above. Then, ask attorneys within your circles of influence to write their states’ attorneys general to push for legislation banning these dangerous unregulated products.
We all need to be a part of the solution to this looming health crisis instead of just standing silent. Let’s help our kids escape the vape!
